As of today, my son is officially a teenager (which I have to admit makes me feel really old!). We surprised him by taking him and a couple of friends indoor skydiving – something he has wanted to try for a while.

We arrived a bit early, so we had the opportunity to watch people do it for a bit, which was pretty funny, as people’s faces go all rubbery in the wind and they all have this  wonderful look of excitement and terror on their faces. Unfortunately it kind of set Z into a panic. She had been really excited about it beforehand, but when she saw people flying around, she changed her mind and decided she wasn’t going to to it after all. I told her she could skip her turn to fly if she wanted, but she should go ahead and get suited up and go through the training just in case she felt differently later. The trainer was very reassuring, and by the time we were fully dressed, Z was feeling ready to try it again. I’m so glad she did it, because, once she got out there she really loved it.

Alex was enthusiastic from the beginning, and was also excited to try the high flying where the trainer takes you way up the air shaft. Z and I both declined this honor, but he said it was great.

I tried it too, and while it was fun, I can’t say I liked it enough to do it on a regular basis or anything. I can definitely see why they ask you about previous shoulder dislocations, because if you get in the wrong position it can really make your arms sore. It is also hard to not to look down. It was really cool, however, to see the trainers do their demonstrations of all the tricks you can do when you get to an expert level – they could hover upside-down and do all kinds of wonderful flips and rotations. It looked just like flying.
